Lady Bay Festival. Commissioned digital video work.

Working with residents and visitors to the Lady Bay festival 2013. Getting them to share stories and memories. Gavin also created a 3D string installation in the ground of Lady Bay School, with the help of volunteers.

This project, Gavin took part as an artist-volunteer for exhibition is themed around immigration, particularly the shoes of immigrants to the city of Nottingham, near or far. On many occasions when someone arrives in a new city, a new country, even a new continent the only land that they feel they can claim in the soles of their shoes, and as they walk there land; memories, stories, emotions follow them step by step.

Gavin actively takes his research to communities, work places and charity organisations. He is currently breaking down barriers to the arts through dialogue and exposure, delivered in an approachable and friendly environment. He is looking particularly at the ownership of images and ideas during the process of visual representation in the artworld.

Gavin co-delivered a Kite Making workshop with Artist and Facilitator Rhiannon Slade, and researcher Martha Glazzard. The kites became a symbol of hope and freedom, exploring common stereotypes, conflicts and aspirations between Nottingham and Afghanistan - through making and dialogue.

Nottingham Contemporary - Vocal Event. Telling stories abut objects. An extension to the Boots and Routes project -as commissioned by Nottingham City Council. Gavin's story - a melancholic reflection of his grandfathers life through a story about a rust old key. Audio recording available. 12mins.

Gavin is collating ideas for workshops and activities which help to make people happy.

As I wander around the streets on Nottingham I often notice little notes on the floor. These notes give an insight into people’s lives, their personality, identity and activities. Another piece to the jigsaw. These found texts are then catalogued and narrated back to community based audiences.

120 comments, 60 Photos, and an audience of over 40 for the Live performance. “Robin Hood Robin Hood, Riding through the Bay. Ventures to the city, Dog poo all the way” “Riding round the one way, where is fricck to go. A’yup me duck, aup y’alright. Local Lingo.” “But poverty and violence, often have to meet. Reputation of crime, shooting in the street“

Gavin J R at the Lady Bay Biennale Festival. Engaged community participatory performance, whereby the artist, Gavin J R, collects thoughts, words and phrases about Nottingham from the visitors and residents of Lady Bay area. Asking them three questions. During the event Gavin then used the words to compose a poem which was then performed, in an improvised Jazz style (including terrible singing!) , back to an audience at the All Hallows Community Hall.

Gavin also attends, delivers and helps to co-ordinate as many networking events as he can for artists and related professions. He is also a member of Thinking Through Practice which is a Nottingham based group of artist-researchers.

The Summer Lodge is a residency for staff, students and visiting artists within the field of Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University. The summer lodge aims to act as a platform for research, networking, creating artwork as well as a great chance to eat lots of nice food and drink lots of tea.
